The White House Staff Photographers' photographs were used to document President Carter's tenure as president. |
| Scope and Content Note |
This series consists of 600,000 color and black and white photographs ofJimmy Carter, his family and staff while he was president. Arranged numericallyand then chronologically, the collection documents the day-to-day activities ofPresident and Mrs. Carter. This series also includes shots of senior WhiteHouse aides such as Hamilton Jordan, Jody Powell and Zbigniew Brzezinski;cabinet members and cabinet meetings; President Carter's foreign and domestictrips and state visits by foreign leaders. Significant events such as thePanama Canal Treaty signing ceremony, Camp David Mid-East Summit and TreatySigning ceremony, SALT II, and the visit Pope John Paul II are especially welldocumented. Photos of Carter family members, particularly Amy Carter, also areincluded in the collection. However, few photos were taken of the family in theprivate residence of the White House. Contact sheets of the negatives are available in the research room forreference use. There is no name or place index for the collection. Researchersmay use the Presidential Daily Diary Name Index to determine dates of meetingswith the President. |
